Just over a week is left for the legislature to complete its work, and education still does not have its target! The Education Finance Conference Committee is still waiting for its joint target so that it can negotiate one final education bill to be sent to the Governor. If you are interested finding out more about targets, link here. We started the session with such high hopes and wonderful rhetoric about all that we needed to do for our children, and here we are limping along in the last week. The lack of investment in our schools will harm them--it is as simple as that. If you are interested in what the Minnesota Budget Project has to say about What's At Stake , link to their report here.
We need to let the leadership of the state know how we feel about education being left to the last moments one more time. Call and email Governor Pawlenty, Speaker of the House Kelliher, and Majority Leader Senator Pogemiller. Talk with your local legislators and ask them to demand that legislative leaders take action. The target may be set as this email is being sent, and when and if that happens, action on the final E-12 Omnibus Bill will be swift; but it is very possible parents will be sorely disappointed with the results. There's a terrific article from the chair of the Association of Metropolitan School Districts that really captures the essence of the three proposals now at the Capitol and what we can expect from this session. Link to it here - it is worth your time to read!
