12/28/2006 12:00 AMKristin Holtz, Litchfield Independent Review Special education costs and declining enrollment led to a $467,649 drop in the Litchfield School District general fund, auditors reported Tuesday night. The district's unreserved, undesignated general fund balance fell to $248,597 after the district received an unexpected $250,000 in special education bills. Litchfield board members and administrators are hoping the Minnesota Legislature will look at its base rate special education funding, which allows districts to be reimbursed for students served outside their home districts. Superintendent Bill Wold said it is an unfair system since some schools are undercharged and others, like Litchfield, overcharged. State Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Grove City, attended Tuesday's meeting and said it is likely the legislature will re-examine the funding formula.
