Building a better student

Woodbury High School is helping its students and future students prepare for the rigors of high school studying.

Student achievement specialist Barbara Waldschmidt, WHS principal Linda Plante and Christine Dease, who helped with the media imaging, have created a booklet called “Study Strategies” for students and parents to use as a guide for studying.

“When students come from junior high to high school the academic demands are quite different,” Waldschmidt said.

As a student achievement specialist, Waldschmidt helps students and teachers prepare for Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments tests and also examines the results.

“I look at what areas are our strengths and what areas we need to build up on,” Waldschmidt said.

To build the Study Strategies booklet, Waldschmidt took researched study habits and skills that high achieving students have displayed.

“We took a look at some of the basic study skills that all students have to have. Then I researched some of the recent studies that have been done on these issues,” Waldschmidt said.

Each booklet costs $5 to cover the costs of printing.

“(We charge for it) because the school doesn’t have any budget for something like this and we felt that it was something parents could use with their student,” Waldschmidt said.

So far the booklets have gone over very well, especially with parents of students entering high school soon.

“We sold it the first time at parent conferences, in December and then we sold it to the parents that came to Royal Opportunities night. The literacy coach at Lake Junior High also had it available at parent conferences,” Waldschmidt said. “People have been picking it up, it seems that interest was very high at the Royal Opportunities night — parents had high school on their mind.”

For students or parents that are interested in buying the booklet, they can still stop by the principal’s office at Woodbury High School and purchase one. For more information or questions, contact Waldschmidt at bwarldsch@sowashko.k12.mn.us.
