To the editor:

For the past two years, I’ve volunteered and emceed the Nicollet Junior High International Festival, which celebrates the diversity among our students in School District 191. According to the Department of Education, the number of students in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage with limited English proficiency rose from 8 percent in 2002 to 11 percent in 2005. The number of nonwhite students rose from 21 percent in 2002 to 26 percent in 2005.

At the same time our district is becoming more diverse, our test scores are improving. From 2002 to 2005, test scores in both reading and math improved for our third- and fifth-graders. In fact, in 2005, our students achieved the highest scores ever attained by the district. Math and reading scores exceeded state averages. Now that’s really reason to celebrate diversity in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage.
